פִּטְפֵּט, פִּיטְ׳,(v. preced., a. פַּטָּטָא) 1) to talk, babble. Men.65a חוץ מזקן אחד שהיה מְפַטְפֵּט כנגדו except one old man who talked (childishly) against him. 2) פ׳ ביצרו to talk or argue with ones own passion, to conquer ones self. B. Bath. 109b (play on בנות פ̇וט̇יאל, Ex. 6:25) דאתי מיוסף שפ׳ ביצרו Elazar was a descendant of Joseph, who (is surnamed Putiel, because he) conquered his passion; Ex. R. s. 7, end שהיתה אשתו … יוסף שפ׳ ביצרו … שפ̇יט̇םוכ׳ his wife was a descendant of two families, being on one side of the tribe of Joseph who conquered his passion, and on the other of the family of Jethro who fattened &., v. פָּטַם; Sot.43a.
